Contact the desk
Everything reaches the editorial desk by email. A person reads every message; there is no queue and no autoresponder. We aim to reply within five working days, and rather sooner if you are reporting an error.

Useful details to include: the article title, the sentence or figure you are writing about, and any source that supports your point. We are grateful for corrections, and we publish them.
Frequently asked
Four questions we are asked a great deal
Will you identify a butterfly from my photograph?
We are not an identification service, and we would be doing you a disservice by guessing. Send the record to the national or regional recording scheme for the country you were in — they have verifiers, and your record then contributes to a dataset rather than disappearing into an inbox.
Can I republish an article?
Write to the editorial desk with the article, the outlet and the intended date. We usually say yes for non-commercial use with attribution and an unaltered text. We do not permit reuse in material that promotes the collection of wild specimens.
Do you accept guest articles about gardening for butterflies?
Sometimes, and we are particularly interested in pieces grounded in a specific place over several seasons rather than general advice. A pitch that names its site and its failures is far more likely to be commissioned than one that does not.
Why is there no comment section?
Because moderation is a job, and we would rather do it properly than badly. Correspondence goes to the desk by email and, where it is substantive and the writer agrees, is published as a letter alongside the original piece.
